The United States is preparing to celebrate its 250th anniversary with major events in Washington, D.C., including a large fireworks display, military flyovers, and a speech by President Donald Trump. 

Festivities began with the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, though extreme heat, organizational issues, and political divisions have tempered enthusiasm for some attendees. 

Authorities say security will be heightened with airport-style screening at event entrances, while officials report no known credible threats. 

Despite the challenges, organizers expect large crowds for the historic Independence Day celebration.
