The race to become the next United Nations Secretary-General is entering a critical stage as candidates present their visions ahead of the Security Council’s selection process.

Contenders from Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean have emphasized restoring trust in the UN, strengthening multilateral cooperation, promoting development and improving the organization’s effectiveness.

With current Secretary-General António Guterres leaving office at the end of the year, many member states are also calling for the UN’s first female leader, as gender, regional representation and geopolitical considerations are expected to shape the final decision.
