British Colombia declares state of emergency due to wildfires

British Columbia declared a state of emergency on Saturday, Aug. 8, as fast-moving wildfires placed more than 20,000 people under evacuation orders.

According to the Canadian Inter-agency Forest Fire Centre, more than 4 million hectares (9.9 million acres) in Canada have burned during 2026.
