Why do Panda birthdays matter?

Qing Bao celebrated her fifth birthday on Sept. 12 at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

But behind the cake is a conservation story more than 50 years in the making. Since the first giant pandas arrived in Washington in 1972, Smithsonian and Chinese scientists have worked together on panda reproduction, research and habitat conservation.
