Venezuelan authorities and the United States signed a sweeping oil deal in late August with plans to boost production across the nation. But in Lake Maracaibo, considered the birthplace of Venezuela’s oil industry, hundreds of abandoned wells leak crude into the water. Fishermen and local residents say the pollution affects their livelihoods and health and many say environmental oil cleanup should be the first priority over new production.
