Solar panels are transforming lives in remote Amazon communities as El Niño threatens to worsen drought. In Nova Sociedade, deep inside a protected area of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, solar power provides clean water and enough electricity to meet the daily needs of 36 families.
The community previously relied on diesel generators, but fuel is costly and polluting, while power is limited and unreliable. So far, similar systems have been installed in 29 other communities. The technology is also providing electricity to schools, health centers and local businesses.
