The U.S. government has spent more than $47 billion so far on its war with Iran, military estimates show.

The Pentagon provided Congress with a new estimate this week, amid fallout over the continuing conflict.

President Trump initially told U.S. taxpayers that the war in Iran would be over in a matter of week.  It has continued for eight months.

$29 billion worth of munitions have been used by U.S. forces on Iran in that time.

$11.9 billion went to operational costs, while an additional $6 billion is tied to equipment losses, the Pentagon says.

Twenty-one U.S. service members have been killed and 865 wounded in the conflict.

There was $3.5 billion increase in U.S. spending on Iran since early September, according to AP, citing the report.

President Trump has said new strikes on Iran are an option after the midterm elections.

9,000 U.S. troops were sent to the Middle East in early October.
