Global dialogue discusses China’s governance and worldwide development

China Media Group and the Chinese Embassy in the United States jointly hosted the “China’s Governance and Worldwide Development Global Dialogue” in Washington, D.C., on Monday, Nov. 2, following the conclusion of the Fifth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The event provided a platform for exchanges on China’s governance experience, its contribution to global development and opportunities for international cooperation. It also highlighted the importance of dialogue and mutual learning amid mounting global challenges.

“To understand China today, one must understand the Communist Party of China,” said Shen Haixiong, President of China Media Group (CMG), in a video address. He emphasized that the plenary session sent a clear message that the CPC would continue to strengthen itself through higher standards and more concrete measures, translating effective Party governance into effective governance in China. He added that the CMG would continue to explain the keys to the CPC’s success and share China’s governance experience with international audiences.

Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, said the session was significant, taking place as the CPC marked the 105th anniversary of its founding and at a critical stage in the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. “China’s success hinges on our Party, so we must ensure full and rigorous Party self-governance. A better CPC means a better China, which in turn contributes to a better world,” Xie said. He also encouraged American friends from various sectors to better understand China’s governance through the lens of Party building.

Renowned American China expert Robert Lawrence Kuhn said that, “the Fifth Plenum’s prescriptions are clear: Strengthening political discipline, cadre oversight and anti-corruption efforts,” stressing that strict Party governance is essential to China’s continued comprehensive development. He also highlighted the CPC’s long-term development goals, policy continuity and sustained focus on improving people’s well-being as important factors behind China’s development.

American educator Ronald Sakolsky said that although China and the United States have different political systems and development paths, both seek to advance national development and improve people’s lives. “If we focus on our similarities and not our differences, the world will be a better place, a place of peace,” he said. Sakolsky also cited his friendship with Chinese desertification-control pioneer Yin Yuzhen as an example of how people-to-people ties can bridge differences.
