Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s open Senate seat on Nov. 3, becoming the first Muslim to be elected to the position.
El-Sayed defeated Trump-backed Republican opponent Mike Rogers, a former Congressman and FBI agent.
El-Sayed ran on the platform of Medicare for All, AI regulation, abolishing ICE, and criticism of the Israeli government and the conflict in Iran.
In his victory speech on Nov. 4, El-Sayed touched on the “irony” of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance - who has disparaged him - having to swear him in, and humorously thanked the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) for giving him the “opportunity to beat [AIPAC] twice.”
