Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from Portugal’s national football team, ending a 23-year international career.
In an emotional statement released Thursday, November 5, Ronaldo said it was time to pass on Portugal’s iconic No. 7 jersey to the next generation.
“Goals fade. Trophies end up in museums. Records are eventually broken. But there is something that time can never erase: the place we hold in people’s hearts,” Ronaldo said.
His retirement follows tensions with Portugal’s new coach, Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo left the national team camp in September after being benched, resulting in a fine and suspension.
